La Mercé 2026
La Mercè is Barcelona’s largest and most famous annual festival, held in honor of the city’s patron saint, “La Mare de Déu de la Mercè” (Our Lady of Mercy). It typically takes place in September, and the festival lasts for several days, attracting both locals and tourists with its vibrant celebrations, parades, music, and cultural events.
The event has deep historical roots, and it dates back all the way to 1687 (the fest was then officially recognized). The festival itself celebrates the traditions, culture, and identity of Barcelona, and through the activities you will get a closer look at the rich heritage of the city (through your different senses).
There are lots of cultural events happening during La Mercé, and some of the most important include the creation of human towers. This is a local custom in which groups of people try to form as high towers as possible (almost like in a circus). Another popular happening is when people run through the streets with fireworks and firecrackers looking like devils, causing lots of noise and fun for the people nearby. There are also big parades in the city, once again causing lots of fun and nice moments for the people visiting Barcelona during the days of the festival.

But, the biggest parts of the event are still indoor concerts and cultural happenings. You can read more about the concerts and programs for the different venues in use at the official website of the event. You can find the website using the link below.

But, don’t judge La Mercé too quickly. On any day of the festivities there are as many as 60 different programs taking place all around the city. Many of these are out in the open and free to spectate, while other programs are concerts for which you need to buy a ticket. No matter what, it is worth looking at the official website of the event and check the detailed program for every single day of the festival to find out if there are anything going on that you find interesting or not.
